The Bargain and the Crossing · Companion Reading
Companion Reading in the Corpus
The Bargain and the Crossing is a narrative synthesis. It carries no inline citations by design; instead, every chapter is traceable here to the specific analytical documents in the Malaysia corpus that it draws upon. Those documents hold the full primary-source citations, the contested-record detail, and — as the verification campaign proceeds — their fact-check status. Read them for the evidence behind the story.
On verification. As of this edition, the source documents are
[DRAFT]and carry a large body of open[TBD-VERIFY]tags (the corpus counted 755 across the Malaysia set). This book inherits those hedges rather than resolving them; it never asserts more than its sources have earned. Fact-check audits, when filed, live undermalaysia/docs/factcheck/.

The source canon
The scholarly and documentary foundation for the whole book is catalogued in:
- MY-R-01: Malaysia Governance Books Canon — the four temporal layers, the named contestation lines (May 13; Operation Lalang; the Anwar trials; the 1988 judicial crisis), the Malay-language substrate, and the Johor sub-field, with the canonical authors the chapters rest on (Tunku Abdul Rahman, Mahathir, Anwar, Khoo Boo Teik, Cheah Boon Kheng, Kua Kia Soong, Crouch, Means, Gomez, Hwang, Slimming, Welsh).
Planned companions (not yet written)
Several documents are planned in the Malaysia taxonomy but not yet written; when they exist they will deepen the named-attribution treatment this book gives to specific questions, and should become primary sources for the relevant chapters:
- MY-D-05: Anwar Ibrahim Premiership (2022–present) — currently an outline-only stub; the Madani-government story is sourced here from MY-D-06 / MY-D-07 / MY-E-02 / MY-H-PM-09.
- MY-J-02: Operation Lalang and the 1988 Constitutional Crisis — three accounts; sourced in Chapter 4 from MY-B-02.
- MY-J-03: Anwar Ibrahim's Trials — sourced in Chapters 4 and 8 from MY-H-PM-09 / MY-B-02.
- MY-J-04: Najib's 1MDB Conviction and 2024 Partial Pardon — the pardon and the disputed "Royal Addendum" are flagged in Chapter 11 as not yet establishable from the written sources.
- MY-H-JHR-FED-02 (Hishammuddin Hussein) and MY-H-JHR-MB-08 (Onn Hafiz Ghazi) — outline-only stubs; their figures are drawn in Chapter 14 from adjacent written docs.
